Day 3 – Photos, the Aquarium and the Trip Home

Standard

It is always bittersweet on the last day of any trip, short or long.

You want to stay and grab hold of any experience you missed, but your bed at home is always calling your name.

So we did what any good Girl Scout would do???? right? We took Old Tyme Photos! Don’t we make good saloon girls?

Then we headed downstairs to the Sea Life Aquarium.

We got to see jellyfish.

We walked under sharks. Eeek!

And saw many other wonders of the sea.

Now we are home sweet home.

Awesome trip, amazing experience!

And I am glad I got to share it with my friends and daughters!

Day 2 – the Day of the Fearless Girls

Standard

The girls started out the day by deciding to forgo the China Ann McClain concert because of the crowd.

When we finally got motivated we decided to go Nickelodeon Universe in the Mall

First we were pulled into the Airbrush Tattoo booth, because well ‘like mother like daughter!’ Brae’s is a hummingbird and flower.

Gillian’s is a fierce tiger! ROAR!

Then on to the rides. My kids apparently are the opposite of me. They love thrill rides like roller coasters and Detonator-type rides.

That is the Spongebob Roller Coaster, which my oldest rode twice. I am sure she would have kept going if I had let her.

Then we did some old-fashioned carnival games before we headed back to the hotel. Six hours of running around an amusement park in a mall is tiring!

On our way out we ran into the Brownie Elf and some of the Daisy Petals. This is Brae and I with one of them.

After that we went back to the hotel, ordered in Chinese takeout and then went swimming. We were all super tired, but in a completely awesome kind of way!

Oh What a Trip!

Standard

Had an excellent trip to the Mall of America with one of my BFFs and my daughters!

We drove into Minnesota on Friday.

We got up early on Saturday to see the Birthday Celebration of the Girl Scouts at the Mall of America.

Did you know that the organization is 100 years old?

There were more girls than ever imagined! Over 50,000 attended!

We did a few of the Girl Scout activities but the girls were quickly overwhelmed with the amount of people.

So we decided to ride the light rail downtown.

to be continued tomorrow……

Fabulous Food Fridays: Walking Tacos

Standard

In honor of my daughter’s Girl Scout Troop camp out this weekend I thought I would resurrect Fabulous Food Friday and share a recipe from my Girl Scout days. It is great for camp outs, family get-togethers and just for an easy to clean up dinner.

Walking Tacos

Ingredients:

Pre-packaged single serving bag of Fritos

1 lb of ground beef

taco seasoning mix

Lettuce

Tomatos

Onion

Shredded Cheese

Sour Cream

and any other fixings your fam or guests would like for a ‘taco salad’

Directions:

Brown your ground beef and mix with taco seasoning as directed on package.

Prepare any veggies…dice tomatoes, chop onion, etc.

Open bag of Fritos, be careful not to tear the bag because it is your ‘bowl’. Add meat, veggies, cheese, sour cream…basically whatever your heart desires.

Stick a fork in it and enjoy!

Throw away bag when done, no plates/bowls to clean!

Do you remember any Scout or camping recipes from your youth?

Girl Scout Night at Disney On Ice: A Double Daughter Date

And who did we get to see?  Buzz and Woody and all the gang from Toy Story 3!

As you can see the girls had fun! Daddy Dearest and Mommy did too, even if our wallets were considerably lighter leaving the show.  :)

Missing the Merry-Go-Round

Standard

Ever since one of the Girl Scout moms and I had a conversation about parks the other day, I have been nostalgic.

I have been taking the kids to the park more since the weather is warming up. Something I haven’t been able to do in the past because I worked and when I was first staying at home, Dominik was too little.

Anyway, we were talking about how we missed the things that made the park fun for us as kids. The silly little animals on springs that you could get and ‘ride’, the creaky old merry-go-round, the swing sets…..

If that last one surprised you, it sure did me too.  They have done extensive remodeling on our parks in my town over the last few years and apparently not only did we lose merry-go-rounds and monkey bar domes, but swing sets didn’t make the cut either.

So the the remodel of the park across the street took us from a full playground with several areas and things to play on down to three things. A sand volleyball area, a soccer field and what as kids we called a ‘big toy’.

The big toy has three slides and is similar to the picture above though much taller.  It has one tire swing off to the side and that is it.

My kids go to the park and after 30 minutes they are done.  Why? Because we have a small version of the big toy in our backyard.  And….at least ours has swings attached and sand to play in.

If there aren’t many other kids there when we are, there is nothing to do, you can’t play soccer or sand volleyball with a mom, a 4 yr old and an 8 yr old.

It makes me sad that they won’t have memories of climbing the pole to ring the bell, riding the silly bear with the circus hat trying to get the nose to touch the ground or having swinging contests to see who can get the highest.

The worst is the feeling that my kids will not know the camaraderie and excitement of getting a whole bunch of kids on the merry-go-round and taking turns spinning it.

Ten of you holding on for your dear lives with one leg down, all pushing off like we were rowing a boat…faster and faster.

Or the satisfaction of talking a ‘big kid’ into spinning you as fast as they can and you hold on as tight as you can, feeling like you were going to throw up and loving every second of it.

Don’t be surprised if you see a post this summer that we are installing a merry-go-round in our backyard, lol.  Never put anything past me.
